This text presents the Centers for Studies and Research in Gender and Sexuality (NEPGS) of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul (IFRS), as an essential public policy for the promotion of diversity and resistance in the educational space. The NEPGS are present in 12 of the 17 IFRS campuses and present themselves as spaces of plurality and incentive to respect, sometimes showing a reference for the discussion of concepts such as sexual orientation and discrimination. Among the objectives of this work, it is important to present the Nuclei and their actions as a way to disseminate knowledge about the themes of gender and sexuality, in addition to presenting them as a permanent public policy of IFRS. For that, students participating in the NEPGS were interviewed, civil servants who coordinate the Centers and the IFRS rector. It is noteworthy that the knowledge on this theme is extremely relevant, mainly because there is a series of misinformation conveyed by different media, and the growth of discourses of violence and hatred has been intensifying, mainly through social networks. Thus, knowing the history of the implementation of the NEPGS and its actions allows the dissemination of a culture of peace and new actions that encourage respect and the fight against prejudice in the school environment.
