Due to the presence of Portuguese literature in writings of Brazilian authorship in the 19th century, this work aims to study Portuguese Romanticism, based on the literary productions of Almeida Garrett in 19th century periodicals in Maranhão - which were responsible for the dissemination of letters in the province of the time. To this end, the 19th-century periodical from Maranhão, Parnaso Maranhense, was selected as the object of study. The present work also aims to understand, based on the results obtained, the manifestation and influence of Portuguese Literature - focusing on romantic-Portuguese writings by Almeida Garrett - in the formation of national literature and, more specifically, of Maranhão literature. The main references for the study of the Maranhão press were Martins (2010); for Portuguese Romanticism Moisés (1980) and Abdala Jr; Paschoalin (1985); and to quotation Compagnon (1996).
