The present article is an excerpt from our doctoral research entitled “Re-signifying the didactic treatment of literary texts in Spanish at the university for the training of language teachers,” conducted at the Posla of UECE. The aim of this article is to analyze the testimonies of the participants regarding the importance that the Spanish language has had in their lives since childhood and what motivated them to pursue a degree in Spanish Language and Literature. These testimonies were collected during the research. Our methodology was based on action research, using the Focus Group as one of the instruments. The theoretical framework includes Barcelos (2007, 2013), Dalinghaus, Nonemacher, and Batista (2017), Carvalho and Costa Junior (2021), among others. At the end of the research, we concluded that various factors led the pre-service teachers to develop beliefs about the relevance of the Spanish language in society and their intention to become teachers of this language.
