The Importance of Literature:
Exploring its Roles in Contemporary Society
Abstract
This article discusses the importance of literature in contemporary society, highlighting its various roles and impacts. Through a literature review, it is relevant to explore how literature influences culture, promotes empathy and critical thinking, and serves as a tool for reflection and social transformation. We argue that literature plays a crucial role in shaping informed, compassionate and engaged citizens, and defend its continued relevance in the digital age. In addition, it examines the first names in Brazilian literature and discusses the importance of including literature in educational policies, such as the National Common Curriculum Base (BNCC). It argues that the exclusion of literature from these policies can result in a significant loss in the cultural, intellectual and emotional development of students.
