Abstract

Applied Linguistics, by allowing new perspectives for the analysis of social reality by the researcher, also contributes to the confrontation of historically constituted and legitimized ideas. Through dialogue with various epistemological fields, such as history, literature, anthropology, sociology, among many others, the applied linguist has before him/her a vast terrain, with countless possibilities of knowing, deconstructing and constructing realities, positioning the human being and their experiences in contexts that will, over time, form their culture and identity. This is what we do in this article, in which, through the novel “Maggie – a girl of the streets”, we seek to analyze the various scenarios contained in what is conventionally called modernity, a dubious process – to say the least – that privileges a few ones and condemns so many to a life of suffering, inequality and violence.
