UMA ADOLESCENTE NEGRA PROTAGONISTA EM HOLLYWOOD: ANÁLISE DO FILME JOVENS BRUXAS

This essay analyses the development of the black female protagonist in the movie “The Craft”, a 1996 summer hit from Hollywood. After comparing the black and the white protagonists (regarding screen time, amount of lines spoken and plot’s consequences), the conclusion is the movie was not very successful in terms of black representation. The character is not much more developed than the black best friend trope, and the movie makes the audience empathize with some racist white girl’s suffering instead of the black protagonist, victim of racism. In spite of that, the movie offers some positive traits to the character, allowing black women to exercise their oppositional gaze.
