Thematic workshops allow teaching chemistry in a contextualized way. These activities can contribute to meaningful learning. Such proposals are also suitable for remote teaching, making classes more interactive and attractive. In this work we present the elaboration, validation and application of the thematic workshop entitled "The smoke of diesel engines in the Brazilian capital of the truck". The activity was carried out remotely by undergraduates in chemistry of the institutional program for scholarships for initiation in teaching in Brazil (PIBID). A qualitative approach was employed to analyze data obtained from diaries and video recordings on Google Meet. The results guided the reflections presented here and led to the conclusion that participation in PIBID was very relevant for teacher training, especially in remote classes.
