Abstract

There is a mismatch between the readings that interest adolescents and those that are requested by the school. Given this, we need to act on the readings of the didactic texts of Science and Chemistry in particular. Especially when we know that students learn science from the explanations of the teacher or from the readings they do. Hoping to contribute to the debates in the area, this work presents and discusses the results of a research done with students of Chemistry of a particular school. We sought to evaluate if reading was used to teach and learn Chemistry. The results showed that reading, especially textbooks, was rarely done at school or outside it. When made, she was unaccompanied by a necessary teacher mediation. We understand that the change of this framework involves the inclusion of this discussion in teacher training courses and the development of extension actions that involve the entire school community.
