Handmade soap production as a way of preserving the environment and teaching science

Abstract

This work aims using of elaboration of handmade soap from residual oils as a tool for science teaching. The activity was carried out with students from the 8th and 9th grade of elementary school, in Coari city, Amazon. Homemade soap and liquid soap (detergent) were produced in experimental class. impact of improper disposal of cooking oil on the environment and the transformation of matter were explored. Students presented the result of the activity in a cultural project  by the school on the environment. The students presented the product made by them followed by a short explanation. The results demonstrate an evolution in the students' perspective related to the care for the environment and a greater understanding of alternatives for the disposal and reuse of cooking oil.
