Abstract

Societies are results and products of the construction of identities and, at the same time, of what is presented and described as elements that compose them. As Brazil is made up of diverse ethnic and social groups, which give it unique characteristics, it is essential that these groups be known and understood. Peoples should be respected for their own history and culture, as their group identity will integrate regional and national identity. This article aims to reflect on the indigenous histories and cultures that make up the identity of Rio Grande do Sul and Brazil, addressing how these elements are incorporated in the formation of the population through school education. Therefore, the institution of Law No. 11645/08, which deals with the teaching of indigenous history and culture, contributed to the knowledge about such aspects. It is intended to discuss and present research results on compliance with the referred legislation, in the school environment.
