Sociodemographic and clinical profile of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma in a Western Amazon oncology referral unit

Abstract

Research carried out with the aim of analyzing the epidemiological profile of patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oral cavity in a region of the Western Amazon. Data were collected from medical records. Fourteen cases were evaluated between 2011 and 2020. The majority of the patients were male (64.29%) with a mean age of 62 years, predominantly of multiracial (64.28%), and with low educational attainment (35.7%). Smoking (57.14%) and alcohol consumption (46.6%) were prominent risk factors. The most common location of SCC was on the lateral border of the tongue (21.43%). The prevalent histopathological type was moderately differentiated (21.43%). Surgery was the primary treatment modality. Recurrence occurred in 28.57% of cases, and metastasis in 14.29%. The results emphasize the need for further epidemiological studies and attention to local public policies for the prevention of oral cavity cancer.
