Abstract

Watermelon is cultivated throughout Brazil. It is relevant to agribusiness and Brazil is the 4th largest producer in the world, with the state of Acre having an average production of 17,705 tons. However, severe pest attacks have caused significant losses, notably Acalymma bivittulum (Kirsch). This insect pest causes defoliation and can transmit bacterial wilt (Ralstonia solanacearum) and the cucumber mosaic virus (Cucumber mosaic virus – CMV). Given the above, this work aims to report the occurrence of A. bivittulum and record the injuries caused to watermelon plants. A. bivittulum was found in watermelon plants in Rio Branco, Acre, being the first report in the State of Acre. Insects have been found in large numbers, producing significant defoliation on plants. Therefore, it is necessary for management measures to be adopted, such as collections and monitoring, aiming to avoid population outbreaks of this species in the state of Acre.
