Autochthonous malaria in the municipality of Rio Branco – acre: analysis of a decade (2010-2019)

Abstract

A study carried out from 2003 to 2011 found that 5,394 cases of autochthonous malaria were reported in Rio Branco, with the presence of the disease in the capital of Acre being vehement, and therefore, there is a need to monitor these cases over the years. Cross-sectional, observational, retrospective, historical series study, which identified cases of autochthonous malaria that occurred in the capital of Acre in the last decade using information contained in the disease notification forms present at the SIVEP-malaria (Epidemiological Surveillance Information Service). 1132 cases of autochthonous malaria were reported in Rio Branco during the study period, a minimum value of 56 cases was observed in 2014 and a maximum value in 2015 of 168 cases, with peaks in the years 2010, 2012, 2016 and 2017. There was still an important reduction in cases in 2018 and 2019. There was an 81% reduction in the number of cases of autochthonous malaria in the municipality of Rio Branco in the period studied when compared to the period from 2003 to 2010. Most cases were of vivax malaria, which occurred in men under 40 years of age who were infected in rural areas.
