Abstract

For a portion of the Brazilian population, birds of the Psittacidade family have sentimental value, and are treated as pets. Therefore, this study aimed to research which species of parrots live together as a pet, to define which species is most found, observing the conditions of creation, legality and health of the birds. Of the 100 birds found, 68% are native fauna and 32% are exotic fauna. The species Amazona ochrocephala was the most found representing 30%. It was found that 47% of the birds lived in a confinement system and that the majority (75%) did not have an adequate diet. 85% of the birds did not show clinical alterations and 15% showed clinical signs compatible with some pathology. It was found a high rate of native birds being illegally removed from nature and a low demand for veterinary services for the treatment of birds. Such findings demonstrate an unfavorable scenario for domiciled parrots since they disregard biological and behavioral aspects of the species and violate Brazilian legislation.
