Anthelmintic efficacy of the ethanolic extract of the leaves of Momordica charantia L., on eggs and larvae of gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep in the state of Acre, western Amazon

Abstract

 This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the Momordica charantia L. extract on eggs and larvae of gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep. For the tests, feces from naturally infected animals were used, which underwent parasitological examinations of OPG and coproculture. During the tests, faecal cultures, 380μg of the extract were added to the CL-50% group and 760μg to the CL-100% group. The control group received no treatment. The phytochemical analysis evidenced the presence of important metabolic compounds, such as phenols, tannins and triterpenoid steroids. Coproculture, expressed efficacy of the tested product at 22.15% for CL50% group and 34.72% for CL-100% group. Momordica charantia L. exerts effective control on nematode infections, but should be tested in other doses, seeking greater efficacy.
