Abstract

Bamboo is renewable and low cost, found in abundance in the State of Acre. However, most bamboo species are susceptible to the attack of fungi and insects. The durability of bamboo culms can be increased by treatments with natural products or synthetic chemicals. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate changes in the physical properties of the Guadua sp culm submitted to different preservative treatments using salt water, residual oil and Boron solution (CCB). The steps were carried out: collection and identification of culms from Guadua sp. in  UFAC Zoobotanical Park; preservative treatment, drying and saturation of the culms to obtain the basic density, moisture content, shrinkage (radial, tangential and volumetric) and anisotropy. It is concluded that the treated culms underwent significant changes in physical properties in comparison to the control; among the physical characteristics that suffered the greatest variations were the shrinkages (radial, tangential and volumetric) in the samples treated with residual oil, showing the potential of this type of treatment in the protection of the culms of Guadua sp.,  however tests of accelerated decay of culms must be carried out to prove the results.
